On average, you should expect about three or four years of life out of your car battery. After this time, the battery will get too old and die. We can replace your old battery with a new one. It’s best to bring your vehicle to our shop at the first sign of trouble to avoid getting stranded with a dead battery.
Battery Warning Light
If your battery is having difficulty maintaining a charge, the battery light on your dashboard may illuminate. This is the main computer chip’s way of letting you know there is something going on with the electrical system. In most cases, this problem is a dying battery that needs to be replaced.
Frequent Jump-Starts
Another sign that your battery is dying is if you have to jump-start it frequently. When healthy, and as long as your alternator is healthy, the battery should stay charged unless you do something to discharge it such as leaving your lights on. Frequent jump-starts indicate that the battery cannot hold a charge.
Electrical Problems
Speaking of leaving the lights on, your automobile will start to have electrical problems if the battery is going bad. For example, the headlights may be so dim that it is difficult to see at night. You may also start to have problems with your power accessories and components.
Corroded Terminals
If you are concerned that your car’s battery is going bad, pop the hood when the engine is cold and inspect the battery. Specifically, make sure that the battery terminals are not corroded. Also, check for corrosion on the battery cables. If anything is corroded, your battery is leaking battery acid.
Sulfuric Acid Odor
Another sign that your battery is leaking battery acid is a sulfuric acid odor around the battery. If you don’t already know this, sulfuric acid smells like rotten eggs. Consequently, if you can smell rotten eggs around the car battery, you’ve got a battery leak. The battery needs to be replaced.
Misshapen Battery Case
Finally, there is a chemical reaction that goes on inside your battery in order for it to work. If something goes wrong with this chemical reaction, it can actually change the shape of the battery case. As such, also visually inspect the battery case to make sure it is not bubbling or cracked.
